Corrosion and Protection

During use, especially in marine, humid, and acidic environments, Wire Ropes face severe corrosion. Main factors include: salt and moisture in seawater accelerating oxidation of the wire surface; drastic changes in temperature and humidity easily causing metal aging and fracture; and contact with acidic or alkaline gases and chemicals accelerating wire corrosion. Wire rope corrosion is mainly divided into: uniform surface reaction, commonly seen when exposed to humid environments; localized corrosion, like pitting, which develops rapidly in local areas, leading to wire breakage; in some cases, hydrogen may enter the metal lattice, causing the metal to lose toughness.

1. Coating Protection
Apply anti-corrosion materials such as hot-dip galvanizing or epoxy coatings on the wire rope surface to provide effective protection. Hot-dip Galvanizing: Forms a layer of zinc on the steel surface, thereby improving corrosion resistance.Epoxy Coating: Used for protection in highly corrosive environments, resistant to acids and alkalis.

2. Dry Environment
During storage and use, try to keep the wire rope dry to prevent moisture accumulation. Choose a well-ventilated storage area to promote air circulation and reduce humidity. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent moisture condensation due to temperature changes .Keep away from damp basements or bathrooms, etc., and ensure the storage environment is dry.

3. Regular Inspection
Promptly inspect the wire rope for corrosion and replace it if problems are found. Visually observe the wire rope surface for obvious signs of corrosion, such as rust spots or discoloration. Feel the wire rope surface by hand to detect any abnormal bumps or roughness, which might be early signs of corrosion. Use a magnifying glass or microscope to observe the corrosion condition of the wire rope in more detail.Pay special attention to the connection points of the wire rope, such as clamps and thimbles, as these areas are prone to moisture and impurity accumulation, leading to corrosion. Inspect the bent sections of the wire rope, as these areas are susceptible to corrosion and wear due to stress concentration.

Usage Methods of Wire Ropes

1. Pre-use Inspection

Before using A Wire Rope, always conduct a comprehensive inspection. The inspection includes: Observing whether there are exposed wires or significant signs of corrosion. Ensuring the number of broken wires does not exceed the allowable limit, typically restricted to 10% of the wires in a given strand lay length. Confirming that the core is normal and avoiding entanglement that affects normal use.

2. Installation and Operation

Ensure both ends of the wire rope are correctly secured, and check the tightness of clamps and thimbles. Regularly inspect connections to ensure they are not loose. Avoid operating on slippery surfaces and ensure sufficient friction to prevent slipping. Ensure the work area is clean and prevent the wire rope from snagging on debris. Operators must wear protective equipment such as safety gloves and safety shoes during work. Ensure the hoisted load does not exceed the wire rope's rated working load. During wire rope operation, constantly observe its dynamic changes and stop operation immediately if any abnormalities are found.

Storage of Wire Ropes

The following points should be noted when storing wire ropes: Regularly clean the storage area, removing dust, debris, and dirt to keep the environment tidy. Use appropriate cleaning agents and tools, avoiding chemicals that might damage the wire rope. Place the wire rope on stable supports or use pallets for support, ensuring it does not roll or slide. Set up clear signs and warning markers in the storage area to remind personnel to avoid collisions with the wire rope. Regularly inspect the storage condition of the wire rope, promptly adjusting support and securing measures to ensure its stability and safety. Avoid storage in damp, high-temperature places and avoid direct sunlight to prevent UV damage to the wire rope surface. Coil the wire rope neatly, avoiding cross-winding. Clearly mark the storage location, indicating diameter, manufacturing date, and last maintenance record.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

Regularly inspecting the integrity of wire ropes is an important measure to avoid accidents. The following aspects need attention:

Check the wire rope surface for wear, corrosion, etc. Periodically conduct load and tensile tests to ensure its working performance. Continuously monitor the condition of the lubricant to ensure its ongoing effectiveness. Each maintenance and inspection should be recorded in detail, including the specific time of inspection, a detailed description of inspection items and results, and the maintenance measures taken. When problems are found with the wire rope, take corresponding measures promptly: For minor issues, consider repair or maintenance instead of complete replacement. If severe wear or breakage is found on the wire rope, stop use immediately and replace it.
