1. Diameter Selection of Wire Ropes
On cargo ships, the commonly used wire rope diameter range is from 5 mm to 100 mm. The specific choice is closely related to the operating environment, load requirements, operating frequency, and other factors.
Small Diameter Wire Ropes (5mm~12mm): Suitable for lifting light cargo, such as the transportation of small containers. Advantages include light weight, easy handling, and relatively low cost.
Medium Diameter Wire Ropes (12mm~20mm): Suitable for medium-load cargo, such as the loading and unloading of general goods. Advantages include providing stronger tensile strength and suitability for various operations.
Large Diameter Wire Ropes (20mm~50mm): Suitable for transporting heavy cargo, such as the hoisting of large machinery and equipment. The advantage is an extremely strong load-bearing capacity, allowing for the safe lifting of overweight items.
Extra-Large Diameter Wire Ropes (Above 50mm): Used for towing extra-large equipment and vessels. The advantage is a specialized design to withstand extremely high static and dynamic loads.
2. Specifications of Wire Ropes
Wire rope specifications are usually indicated by the "number of strands × number of wires per strand". For example, a wire rope marked "6x19" means it consists of 6 strands, each containing 19 Wires. Common specifications include:
6x19: Composed of 6 strands, each with 19 wires, suitable for general hoisting use.
6x37: Composed of 6 strands, each with 37 wires, suitable for applications with high bending and dynamic loads, offering better flexibility.
19x7: Each strand contains 19 wires, offering strong shape stability and fatigue resistance, suitable for large-scale engineering applications.

3. Selecting the Appropriate Diameter and Specification
When selecting the appropriate diameter and specification, the following aspects should be considered:
Choose the appropriate size based on the cargo weight and the applied force. The general principle is that the working load should be less than 80% of the wire rope's rated load capacity. In damp, corrosive environments, it is recommended to select wire rope specifications with strong adaptability. In high-frequency applications, it is best to choose wire ropes with high elasticity and fatigue resistance performance.
Lubrication and Maintenance
Regular lubrication is a crucial part of wire rope maintenance management. The primary purposes are to reduce friction between the wires, minimize wear, form a protective film to isolate moisture and air, and prevent rust and corrosion. Common lubrication methods include: one is grease-type lubrication, which has higher viscosity and can form a thicker protective layer between the wires; another is liquid lubricating oil, which penetrates more easily and can quickly reach the interior of the wire rope to provide lubrication. Lubrication is typically applied in three ways, briefly described as follows:
1. Spraying Method: Using oil spraying equipment to evenly coat the wire rope surface, suitable for longer wire ropes.
2. Immersion Method: Soaking the wire rope in oil to ensure complete penetration, suitable for smaller wire ropes.
3. Brushing Method: Using a brush to apply oil evenly on the wire rope surface, suitable for localized area lubrication.
A comprehensive inspection and lubrication should generally be conducted monthly. If the wire rope is in a high-intensity working environment, weekly inspection and lubrication are recommended.
